Forts

"Einstein may never have used flashcards, but he probably built forts."
—Lory Hough, Harvard Graduate School

Image of FortsWorkshop Overview: The Forts workshop will empower your students to engage in creative and collaborative building and storytelling. Blanket and broom built forts will transform into wild story settings, as students explore the rich language of imaginative play and capture it in a tall tale to take home.

Grade Level: 1-4

Illinois State Learning Standards: 2A, 3, 4, 19, 21

Workshop Goals and Objectives:
Students will:

  • Explore the Forts exhibit together.
  • Direct the usage of open-ended materials to create a fort of their own design.
  • Practice creative and symbolic thinking skills as forts become caverns, outposts and magical castles.
  • Negotiate the sharing and usage of different props and materials.
  • Enjoy playing in the small spaces they construct.
  • Create rich narratives, using their fort as a starting point.
  • Work in small groups to dictate fanciful tales utilizing the same creative and symbolic thinking of fort building.
  • Leave with a story to take home and build on.
