There's a whole new way to Play It Safe at Chicago Children's Museum! Developed in partnership with the Chicago Fire Department, and with generous funding from The Allstate Foundation, The Allstate Foundation Presents Play It Safe encourages children and families to step into the boots of a firefighter and explore fire safety through play.

It all starts at the command center. There's a lot going on in this firehouse office, but who's doing what? Be the chief and assign tasks, answer and make telephone calls, and scan the city map. Experience the sights and sounds of several smoke detectors at the Smoke Alarm Test Station.

Pretend you're a firefighter and use jackets, gloves, and other accessories to understand what you would need to wear in order to stay safe in a real fire. When the firehouse alarm goes off, slide down the fire pole to get to your truck as fast as you can. Then, load up the fire truck, sound the siren, and turn on the lights to make sure others hear you. Now it's time to put out the fire! Hook up your hose and aim it at the "flaming" bungalow windows.

In the "Get Low and Go" bedroom, practice getting out of the "smoke-filled" room, so you'll know what to do if there's a fire in yours. Once you hear the smoke alarm, get on the floor and crawl quickly around the furniture while the sights and sounds of a real fire surround you.
