Internship Opportunities

Chicago Children's Museum offers many exciting internship opportunities. Our internships enable you to gain valuable experience in your preferred area by working with a supervisor who has extensive knowledge in their field. Although CCM Internships are unpaid, interns enjoy working a part-time schedule of 15-20 hours per week in a friendly, open and relaxed atmosphere.

Passport to the World Intern
The Passport to the World (PPTW) intern will work closely with the Director of Cultural programs to develop programs and activities that educate CCM visitors on a wide range of diverse communities and cultures. Primary responsibilities will be assisting with logistics and operations of PPTW events during internship term, documentation of the impact of program participation through interviews, photos and collection of artifacts and helping with day to day needs of the Community Connections Department.
Requirements: Experience or interest in working with diverse people, research skills, strong Communication skills (verbal and written), and availability to work some weekends and evenings.

Student and Educators Programs Intern

The intern is responsibilities include helping with day to day needs of the department, including preparing for and helping facilitate programs, assisting in writing curriculum, if bi-lingual (Spanish) may help to translate written materials for students and educators and may also assist in developing marketing for programs.
Requirements: Flexibility and ability to manage diverse tasks, comfort interacting with groups of students and teachers, interest in working on developing and facilitating programs for students and teachers.

Arts Learning Intern
The intern is primary responsibility will be working with Arts Learning staff researching, implementing and documenting Kraft Artabounds Studio family programs, which serve our general visitors. Interns will work closely with Arts Learning staff to develop, prepare and lead art activities for family workshops. Interns assist in keeping the studio organized and preparing supplies for workshops. Interns record attendance and assist Arts Learning staff in record keeping. Interns are involved with other programs/special projects on an expressed interest/need basis.
Requirements: Education experience with elementary children, knowledge of and experience with diverse art forms, ability to communicate with and lead groups of people, documentation/photography experience, organization, creativity, flexibility, self-direction, imagination and patience.

Health and Community Connections Intern

The Health and CC intern will work closely with the AVP of CC and the CC team to review existing healthcare initiatives, revise and/or develop new healthcare initiatives, and assist w/the plan to execute these initiatives. All initiatives must fit in w/the larger goals and objectives of the CC department and must support existing community partnerships.

Human Resources Intern
The Human Resources Intern will assist the HR department and the Volunteer & Intern Resources Program. Tasks will include helping research and develop CCM’s Wellness Program, Creating and sending correspondence to prospective employee, intern and volunteer candidates, scheduling interviews and checking references, assisting with job fairs, helping with employee and volunteer trainings, enhancing and promoting CCM’s Volunteer Program, maintaining accurate HR files and project development and implementation.
Requirements: Strong interpersonal skills, excellent written and verbal communications skills, strong organizational skills, ability to work independently, knowledge of computers (word processing), creative, self-motivated and flexible.

Family Programs Intern
The Family Programs Intern will Learn about museum programs for families by preparing, facilitating, and evaluating scheduled hands-on activities for the public. Tasks include and creating, piloting, and evaluating a new Family Programs Activity, assisting with organizing materials, brainstorming ideas, and working alongside museum staff, developing, facilitating and evaluating a new Family Programs Activity Plan and reporting results to the team and department, attending and contributing to staff and team meetings and training sessions and maintaining and reporting records of programs.
Requirements: Strong interpersonal skills, creativity, proven ability to organize groups and projects, excellent written and verbal communication skills, experience working with children and families, knowledge of computer systems a plus (word processing, desktop publishing), flexibility, team player

Museum Research Intern
The Museum Research Intern will be responsible for collecting, coding and analyzing data for on-going research through a variety of techniques, including live observation, videotaping, programming, and interviews, prototyping experimental interventions to increase learning and/or family interaction, contributing to discussions about family learning in informal settings and reading and summarizing published research pertinent to museum-based research. The intern will be ultimately responsible for summarizing and discussing data and conclusions in a short paper and also presenting these findings with a PowerPoint presentation to the Partnership of Playful Learners Steering Committee by the end of their internship.
Requirements: Able to work independently, comfortable working with families, good team player, computer literate in Microsoft and other programs (Statistical software desirable.), computer access desirable, strong writing skills, self-motivated, flexible

Sound Installation Intern
Chicago Children's Museum in collaboration with Favorite Chicago Sounds is seeking an intern for the Favorite Chicago Sounds project slated for installation in the museum this August. Internship duties will include conducting outreach to CCM partnership organizations, giving presentations on the FCS project, and administering/collecting surveys of participants' favorite sounds. In addition, inputting and organizing data online, assisting with the creation and curation of audio field recordings of Favorite Chicago Sounds and taking photographs to use as part of the display of the Favorite Chicago Sounds installation.
Requirements: A background in media production, preferably sound recording, experience with photography preferred, excellent public speaking skills and confidence interacting successfully with the public, organized self-starter who can plan her/his own schedule, as much of the work will be outside of the office. Must be flexible with travel throughout the Chicago community on a weekly basis.

Early Learning Intern
The Early Learning Intern will be responsible for Assisting Early Childhood Educators with curriculum creation, helping staff with development and implementation of learning environments and programs for early learners (children developmentally 5 years and younger), Documenting programs using digital photography and other forms of media, contributing to special projects and complete other projects as assigned and completing a culminating project identified jointly by supervisor and intern to be mutually beneficial.
Requirements: Strong interpersonal skills, ability to organize groups and projects, excellent written and verbal communication skills, strong computer skills (Microsoft Word, Excel, etc) creative, self-motivated, flexible. Digital photography experience a plus. Passion for creating beautiful and effective learning environments for children and their caregivers. Experience working with young children and caregivers.
Ability and willingness to take ownership of assigned projects. Punctual and professional. Ability to lift moderately heavy items required.

Media & Public Relations Intern

The Media & Public Relations Intern will be responsible for developing calendar listings of museum exhibits/programs/events to send to multiple media, generating an issue of Handprint, the museum’s members’ newsletter, acting as a staff photographer—updating the photo archive of programs, exhibits & events, assisting the PR Manager in media relations initiatives pitches to media such as writing press releases and media alerts, and targeted pitches and helping with any other administrative support, i.e. creating press kits, faxing media alerts/releases, etc.
Requirements: Excellent written, verbal and electronic skills. Strong interpersonal skills, proven ability to organize groups and projects, creative, self-directed and comfortable with process and change. Mature, extremely organized with good judgment and willingness to show initiative.
